Lying to the world as I lie to myself
I pull a small doll down from the shelf
The image of a girl with a china face
Looking so innocent, wrapped in lace

Gazing at this doll, I’m shocked to see
This vision of innocence looks just like me
The faint color of her face, as subtle as mine
And like this little china doll, I wear a dress so fine

Paint my lips with a rose red shade
Slowly I watch as reality fades
Paint my eyes with blue; stand up nice and tall
Tint my cheeks with pink, now I am this china doll

Twirl in the mirror as soft music plays
Suddenly my dress tears and frays
Another twirl as I fall to the ground
As I hit it, there’s a smashing sound

My frail body laying motionless on the floor
China pieces lying broken near the door
In my hands, the little china doll remains intact
The broken pieces are from my own face in fact
